What is the UTV Player?

The UTV Player is UTV’s online video catchup service. It allows viewers in the UK to watch a wide range of UTV programming, from soaps to news, for up to 30 days after broadcast.

In addition to catchup of recent programmes, the UTV Player provides a wide range of contemporary video clips covering Local News, Sport, Entertainment and Lifestyle.

The UTV Player also delves into the UTV Archive, featuring videos of UTV’s output since its inception over 50 years ago.

The UTV Player is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, completely free of charge.

What do I need to use the UTV Player?

To use the service you will need a computer or mobile device with a supported browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari). You will also need a compatible version of Adobe Flash or the appropriate codec for mobile versions.

Can I watch the UTV Player on my mobile?

The UTV Player can be used on mobile devices to watch all UTV-produced content. Content is free however you may incur data costs from your mobile provider for streaming video data. As such, we would recommend you use a wifi connection on your mobile device to stream video where possible.

ITV-produced content is not currently available on mobile devices.

Can I watch the UTV Player on my Playstation 3® console?

All UTV Player content is available to stream free-of-charge via the PS3 browser. In order to do so, you should ensure you have updated your PS3 to the latest firmware. There is an option on the PS3 home menu screen for a section entitled TV. There, you must navigate to the ITV/UTV/STV Players section where you will be prompted to enter your Northern Ireland postcode in order to be served with the correct content for your region.

Which programmes are available on the UTV Player?

The UTV Player features a wide range of programmes covering all of UTV’s output. This includes a mix of both UTV and ITV-produced content. We endeavour to make as many programmes available as possible. However, not all programmes will be available on the UTV Player due to broadcast rights. Those programmes which are not available will not be displayed on the UTV Player catchup service. For a full list of available content, please click here.

Can I download programmes from the UTV Player?

UTV Player programmes are not available for download due to copyright considerations. External websites can legally embed our video content using the UTV Everywhere clip embed code. Any other unauthorised redistribution of our content is illegal.

The UTV Player only allows you to stream the video using your internet connection. It is available 24/7 and all functions associated with downloaded programmes, such as skipping, rewinding, restarting and pausing are available on all videos.

Videos are not loading, why is this?

Videos can fail to play for a number of reasons. Please consider:

The speed of your internet connection: Ensure your connection speed is sufficient to stream online videos. UTV recommends a speed of at least 1Mbps. Your connection speed can vary over time depending on web traffic, network strength, your provider and a number of other factors. You can check your connection speed here.

Adobe Flash compatibility: Ensure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash software as this is used to enable playback of UTV Player videos on desktop computers. You will find information on your current version of Flash and update options here.

Your geographical location: Most programmes are not available to visitors outside the UK due to broadcast rights. If in doubt, you can contact us.

Mobile device compatibility: Mobile video should stream on the majority of recent smartphones. However, older devices may not possess compatible codecs to play UTV Player video file types (.m4v) or sufficient processing power. See your manufacturer for more information on your device’s capability.

Playstation 3: Ensure your PS3 has been updated to the most recent official firmware issued by Sony. Also, ensure your network settings and network speed are sufficient to stream high-quality video.

I can see videos but no sound, why is this?

Ensure the volume on the video is turned up. Each video contains a volume control which can be adjusted to preference. Ensure this is up to its highest setting and also ensure your device’s volume control is turned up and the ‘mute’ check box is unticked. If there is still no sound, it is most likely a problem with your hardware, not the UTV Player.

I live outside the UK, can I still watch programmes on the UTV Player?

Most programmes are not currently available to visitors outside the UK due to broadcast rights. However most news, sport, entertainment and lifestyle clips are available universally. If in doubt, you can contact us.

I live in the UK but I still can’t view geo-blocked content, why is this?

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) route their traffic through servers hosted outside the UK. In this instance, your IP address will be registered as a non-UK resident and geo-blocked content will not be available to you. If you believe this to be the case, please contact your ISP for advice.

How do advertisements work on the UTV Player?

Programmes on the UTV Player feature brief advertisements before the start of the programme and some will have a break during the video. The short adverts which run before the main programme are called pre-roll ads and those that occur during are mid-roll ads. These are necessary to help subsidise the cost of the service and cannot be skipped. You can, however, click on the ads for more information.
