Walsh, commanding the centre of the ring, was clearly up for the contest against the Olympic champion, but Adams caught the judges' eye with cleaner punches.

The Belfast fighter continued to press in round two finding her range with a series of aggressive combinations, before Adams reasserted her authority in round three.

Both came out for the final round with little to separate them and, at the bell, Walsh clearly believed she had done enough to secure gold.

Adam's joy at having her hand held aloft by the referee, however, demonstrated just how deep the English woman had to dig for the win.

Three ringside judges did not quite see the fight the same way with one scoring in favour of Walsh as Adams triumphed only via split decision.

Walsh said: "I wanted it more and I feel in my heart that I won it but she's the Olympic champion and she was going to win it if it was close.

"But my coach knows and I know and she will know if she watches the fight again that I got it.

"Today is the start of my career. I came here for the gold and in my heart I know I got the gold medal. But I proved I am up at that level and I really believe that fight was mine."

The north Belfast woman will go home with a richly deserved silver medal - the first ever Commonwealth medal for women's boxing in Northern Ireland - after a promising week of performances.

Not being biased I thought the best and most ambitious fighter lost. Never mind Michaela you have time on your side and you will win your share in the future and you will be up there with Katie Taylor.

Snowy you're so pathetic. couldn't just leave it that all the boxers done themselves proud, u had to bring some sort of country or religious tone to it. With people like you we will never move forward. We done to all the medal winners..... very richly deserved
