Andrew Trimble opened Ulster's account with a try in the opening quarter.

After his disappointing kicking display against Scotland attention was focused on Paddy Jackson and he stroked over the conversion before adding a penalty minutes later.

Ulster increased their lead with a converted try from centre Stuart Olding who produced a superb run to beat the Treviso cover.

The visitors hit back with Dean Budd scoring off a maul to make the score 17 - 10 at half time.

Ulster took their lead to 20 in the second half but things failed to go their way and the Italian side also picked up points narrowing the gap to a five-point lead.

They were also hindered when Iain Henderson and Lewis Stevenson were sent to the sin-bin in the first and second halves respectively.

Ulster's opponents remained resilient throughout with a hat-trick of tries from flanker Dean Budd, a single score from Robert Barbieri, and a penalty and three conversions from Alberto Di Bernardo to draw, which also saw them register a try bonus.

Mark Anscombe's men avoided defeat, thanks to tries from Andrew Trimble and Stuart Olding and 19 valuable points from Paddy Jackson.

Jackson's second penalty at 77 minutes brought the lead to 29-24 for Ulster.

A last minute try brought Treviso level with Ulster- but they failed to land a conversion which would have won them the game.

Anscombe made seven changes to the team that lost to Glasgow last week.

Captain John Afoa started for Ulster at loose-head for the first time.

The disappointing outcome will damage Ulster's chances of hosting a semi-final at home.

Glasgow's 29-13 defeat of Cardiff Blues on Friday means Ulster surrender top spot on points difference.
