Keeper Shay Given, 36, and 31-year-old skipper Robbie Keane, the nation's two most-capped players, in particular were unable to reproduce their best form in Poland and Ukraine as Ireland exited the competition having failed to claim a single point.

After the match Given, Keane, Richard Dunne and Damien Duff remained tight-lipped about retirement plans - but Trapattoni says he has spoken to a number of players about staying on the international stage to help prepare the younger generation.

He said: "I can say the names, but I won't say the names. I am sure they need to stay with their families, I don't know.

"But I said two months ago, it is important for us that these senior players help also the young to gain new experience. That's life, it is not only football."

The young are usually arrogant or shy and the senior players help them grow. That is life, it is not only football.

Giovanni Trapattoni

He added: "When you do your job well - until now, I think they have played well for our country, and we must have a reason.

"In your job, when you get old, if they gave you a pension and say `Go` without respect, what would you think?

"It's not loyalty only, it's correct. We asked them yesterday for a good performance and we played very well. We played at the same level as Italy.

"We need a reason to change it on the pitch. [Aiden] McGeady played well, [Kevin] Doyle played well, also Robbie.

"It's not loyalty, it's respect because they helped us to achieve qualification and we must give them the honour of playing.

"You are not sure that if you make changes, the result will be any different. It's 50-50. When you are sure, you can change, but only after the 90 minutes can you be sure that the change is good.

"Until now is has been good, and I can't just turn the page and forget about it. It's not professional, it is not correct."

This was the Republic's first major tournament for a decade and their first Euro finals since 1988.

"s magowan in belfast wrote (8 days ago): The roi scored 5 against what was a weakened NI team, which drew many of it's squad from the Irish League" S Magowan - if these players weren't good enough, then why were they out on the pitch representing NI? "..and since when did Belfast become part of the Republic?" Belfast is in Ireland. Our country is Ireland, that is how northern Catholics in their hearts & minds have seen it, how they still see it (& i'd suggest it's going to be very difficult to dislodge it from there). The Republic which was striven for has never been established. Democracy wasn't listened to. Instead Democracy was convulsed & turned on it's head & in it's place 2 statelets were created - Northern Ireland & the Saorstat Eireann (or Irish Free State) - the correct term .

Don't really understand the gloating of the Northern Ireland fans. Northern Ireland have not been good for the past 26 years. Qualified for nothing and unlikely to be booking tickets for Brazil either. That is unless they want front row seats to scoff at the Irish team, which is far more likely to qualify (5 tournaments since '88). Best way out for the Northern Ireland fans would be a Great Britain team that they could cheer on. Trap will leave and Ireland will be good again. A new team will be built around McClean, Gibson and McCarthy. Brazil here we come!

"dave in CARRICK wrote (13 hours ago): lETS BE HONEST THEY WERE A TOTAL JOKE AND DIDNT REALLY DO THE COUNTRY PROUD , BUT HEY THEN IT WAS A FOREIGN COUNTRY LOL LOL WHO CARES REALLY LOL" Although, admittedly, not as much of a joke as some countries, it seems. The NI team were thumped by the Netherlands (a team who exited the Euros without a win, or even a point) by (6-0). Interestingly, they were also thumped by Ireland (a team in a similar position)by 5-0. "AND DIDNT REALLY DO THE COUNTRY PROUD , BUT HEY THEN IT WAS A FOREIGN COUNTRY " - but as you say, it's not really your country anyway, is it? It's a "foreign country" to you (but not me). So, your motivation is not so much informative comment as an attempt at gloating

Congrats to the Republic of Ireland who are now the proud owners of the worst record of any country in the finals stages of the European championships ha ha ha.
