World number one Rory McIlroy didn't even get off the tee before snow halted the WGC Match Play Championship first round - leaving the caddies to battle it out in a snowball fight at Dove Mountain in the Arizona desert.

Holywood star McIlroy, as the top seed, was due to play the Republic of Ireland's Shane Lowry on Wednesday, but the wintry weather put paid to the action before they even got going.

And while Portrush's Graeme McDowell did get to start his match against Dubliner Padraig Harrington, they didn't even manage to complete the first hole.

"More like Alaska than Arizona!!" McIlroy declared on Twitter.

"Holy coldness ..." G-Mac added.

"I've only ever played in an event with conditions like this once ... West of Ireland Championship in about 1998."

The caddies have officially just had a snowball fight. Never seen anything like it.

Less than four hours of play went ahead, with other top seeds Tiger Woods and Luke Donald also failing to tee off in their matches.

Spain's Sergio Garcia managed 15 holes against Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and was two shots up on his opponent with the chance to win at the 16th when play resumes.

Further details remain possible though as the freezing conditions continue.

Team Europe's Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter initially tweeted: "What's the problem? Let's play."

But as the snow kept falling, he decided there was more chance of skiing than golf. And he wasn't the only one.

"G-Mac said there's some skis and ski boots if we wanted to go skiing down these slopes, which is kind of funny," Jason Day, who was almost relieved to see the snow after falling six shots behind opponent Zach Johnson, said.

All eyes remain on the skies as the golfers and caddies wait for play to resume - and kill time tweeting pictures of the snowmen and snow angels they've made in the meantime.
