The Holywood golfer's stunning round included five birdies in six holes to score a 64 leaving him tied 29th overall.
However, the defending champion's round did suffer with a double bogey on the 14th hole.
The world number three goes into Monday's final round on eight under, 11 shots off overnight leader Sergio Garcia.
Meanwhile, Portrush man Graeme McDowell hit three birdies and a bogey to score a 69 on Sunday to put him six under par overall and tied for 47th place with the likes of Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood.
The final round of the tournament, which has been hit with weather delays, is due to tee-off around 3pm UK time on Monday.
