The 24-year-old finished 11 under after struggling to a second round score of 70 which left him one shot in front of America's Brooks Koepka on Friday.

It was a slightly more pedestrian finish compared to Thursday's impressive 63 but McIlroy remains confident he can claim his second title at Emirates Golf Club.

"I do," he said, when asked if he expects to repeat his 2009 victory. "I am leading the tournament - I've been in this position before and went on to win."

McIlroy got off to a shaky start on Friday, dropping his first shot of the tournament in his opening hole before making bad drives on the following two, but recovered with birdies on the third, fifth, seventh and tenth holes.

He finished with bogeys on 13 and 16 and a birdie on 18.

"I will just go back tonight and regroup and realise that I am still leading the tournament," the Ulsterman told Sky Sports.

"I hit a couple of loose drives which I haven't done the last couple of weeks but I still feel like I'm playing well enough to go and win the tournament."
