He finished 10 shots adrift of winner Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who survived a nervous finish to claim his seventh European Tour title on Sunday.
McIlroy, 24, remains outside the top 60 after his closing score only lifted him from 63rd to 62nd.
Padraig Harrington also tied for 27th place while Graeme McDowell came tied 53rd.
On Saturday, McIlroy was six shots after the third round, which he ended by angrily walking off the green after a disaster at the final hole.
