The moment of genius came after McDowell's approach to the par-five 13th fell just short of the green and left him 30 yards from the pin.
However the former US Open champion landed the monster putt for an eagle to finish on 70.
Meanwhile playing partner and fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy had to settle for a 71 after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the 16th.
He had been two under with three holes to play.
The world number six, who won five competitions in 2012 but has not won this year, recorded the only birdie of the entire field on the 470-yard ninth.
Luke Guthrie from America led after the first round with a seven-under-par 65.
