Speculation had been mounting since Monday that the former Everton boss would be shown the door at Old Trafford following a dismal first season in charge of the current English champions.

Sunday's defeat against Everton confirmed the club would be without Champions League football for the first time in almost 20 years.

United currently languish in seventh in the league and 23 points off leaders Liverpool.

On Tuesday morning, in a short statement the club confirmed he had left the club.

The statement said: "Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the club.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role."

Long-serving midfielder Ryan Giggs has been announced as interim manager.

There will be no shortage of takers when it comes to seeking a full-time successor for Moyes.

Louis van Gaal is among the front runners. The former Barcelona manager has an impressive CV and will be available this summer when he leaves his post as Holland coach.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp is among the fans' favourites to take over, but the club are understood to favour other candidates.

Diego Simeone is a highly regarded figure in European football after taking Atletico Madrid to the top of the Spanish league and into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

However, many fans would like to see Giggs take the post on a long-term basis, despite his lack of managerial experience.

Moyes slipped into United's training base in Carrington un-noticed on Tuesday morning.

It's thought he was informed of the club's decision during a short meeting with chief executive Ed Woodward just after 8am.

Moyes was hand-picked for the job by Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 league titles during his time at the club.

It was expected to be a difficult first season for the Scot, but few would have expected this season to have gone so badly.

The list of unwanted records broken by Moyes is as embarrassing as it is long.

United are guaranteed to end the season with their worst points total in Premier League history, while Moyes' home record is the worst of any United boss since 1978 when Dave Sexton was in charge.

Coupled with home and away defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton, the sacking has been welcomed by many fans.

At Moyes' final game in charge at Goodison, home of his former club Everton, a fan dressed as the grim reaper and repeatedly taunted the beleaguered boss as he took to the touchline.

That appears to be all the more far-sighted given Moyes, who turns 51 on Friday, has joined the ever-increasing list of managerial casualties.

Speaking on UTV's coverage of the Champions League on Tuesday evening, former Man Utd captain Roy Keane said he believes Moyes should have been given more time.

He explained: "I think it's a shame, he should have been given more time. Some of the players should be ashamed of themselves, they really let him down.

"For David Moyes seventh in the league is disappointing but you need people around you, the support, and I don't think he's had that, certainly from the players."

If you think back when Brian Clough took over Leeds United after Don Revie, and the players wouldn't play for him and he got the sack, same thing with Moyes, players didn't like him and wanted him out, but remember this united fans, Clough went on to win the league a few times and the European cup eith Notts Forest, hope history repears itself

Absolutely disgusted at his sacking!!! The guy was not given a chance, Fergie got out when he did because he knew the state of the team, It should not be Moyes to go it should be half the MUFC team, they are a disgrace, completely overpaid and should be ashamed to wear such a top. Personally, I think they should deduct their wages and start getting rid of players. Im a MUFC supporter and you would think Rooney thought he was playing for Everton again with some of those passes the made.
