The Carnlough man watched Daniel Sturridge score the first goal of the new season to give the Reds the lead at Anfield.
His good work was almost undone when Liverpool conceded a late penalty right at the death.
Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters saw his spot-kick saved by new signing Simon Mignolet to seal a 1-0 win which put Rodgers' men on top table - for less than an hour.
Defending champions Manchester United led the way by the end of Saturday after they comfortably beat Swansea 4-1 to give new boss David Moyes a winning start.
