The Toomebridge man qualified third fastest for the opening race in spite of crashing out during Superpole 3, but a poor start saw him drop down to fourth before the race was halted due to a red flag.
After the restart Laverty dropped another place to fifth only to see the race halted again.
Once proceedings got back underway for the third time, the Aprilla rider consolidated fifth place before a superb final lap saw him snatch the final place on the podium.
Championship front-runner Tom Skyes extended his lead over Laverty at the top of the standings to 35 points by claiming first place, with BMW's Chaz Davies in third.
Race two gets underway on Sunday.
