After a tense first half, Dermot Malone's second half goal proved decisive as Malachy O'Rourke's side took victory by 1-12 to 0-14.

There was little to separate the sides in a tense opening 35 minutes, with the teams matching each other point for point in the opening exchanges.

In spite of question marks over the fitness of Farney forward Conor McManus, O'Rourke opted to play him from the start and the Clontibret clubman repaid that faith by converting six frees over the course of the game.

The hosts squandered a great goal chance in the opening ten minutes when Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan's trademark foray out of his goal saw the ball intercepted by Kieran Hughes, but he was unable steer his lobbed shot inside the posts with an open goal at his mercy.

Things remained tight for the remainder of the half with never more than two points between the sides.

Darren McCurry's late point cut that lead to a single point as Monaghan went in 0-8 to 0-7 ahead at half time.

The breakthrough came when captain Dick Clerkin fed Hughes who in turn played in Molloy, who jinked past Morgan before firing home from close range

Tyrone had the chance to level the game in the final moments, but goalkeeper Niall Morgan sent a long-range free just wide of the posts.

The result sees Tyrone drop to the All-Ireland Qualifiers, while holders will continue their defence of the provincial title when they face Armagh in the semi-finals on 28 June.
