Tyson Fury's unanimous points win over American Kevin 'Kingpin' Johnson in Belfast takes him one step closer to a shot at the WBC world heavyweight title, despite his cautious approach.

Fury, 24, stuck to his game plan throughout Saturday night's eliminator at the Odyssey Arena to take the victory and keep his unbeaten record intact after 20 fights.

Nine years younger than his opponent, he was rarely troubled by Johnson but never intended to go out and get a knock-out against the 33-year-old - however disappointed that left the fans.

"He's not a guy to go and smash up. He's a world class fighter," Fury told Channel 5.

"I boxed to a game plan and vowed not to let my heart get the better of me."

Credit Kevin Johnson - he's a slippery, slippery guy and I never went in to knock him out.

After an uninspiring first five rounds, Fury looked more convincing in the sixth. But he was docked a point in the next round, before making more of an impression with a combination in the eighth.

Johnson, who had only been beaten twice previously - once by Klitschko in 2009 - accused him of fighting "smart but boring".

"They stuck to a very smart game plan," he said.

"Not one time did he come out with that anger and aggression and, towards the end, it got very boring."

In his 20 professional wins, Fury has racked up 15 knockouts.

He's now just one fight away from earning a shot at the title, currently held by 41-year-old Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko.
