Brendan Rodgers called up many of his fringe players for a 4-0 win in a post-season friendly against Shamrock Rovers at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

A crowd of more than 42,000 people packed the stadium to welcome the Reds after their phenomenal season which saw them finish runner up in the Premier League.

Trevor Croly's SSE Airtricity League side put on an impressive display in the first half and could have equalised twice, however, the Merseyside club's quality soon shown through.

None of the Reds' World Cup contingent were involved in the game and while Daniel Agger, Philippe Coutinho and Martin Skrtel travelled with the squad they were not involved.

Of those named in the starting line-up only midfielder Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen had played a significant number of games for the first team this season, although Fabio Borini returned from a season-long loan spell at Sunderland to continue his good form with a goal.

Forward Iago Aspas, whose future at Anfield remains in doubt after an uninspiring debut campaign, opened the scoring after just eight minutes with a smart left-foot finish.

Less than two minutes into the second half Borini netted an impressive curling effort, with defender Martin Kelly capitalising on a deflection to add the third and under-21s striker Jack Dunn rounding off the scoring with six minutes to go.

It is a very confusing head on your story - I always referred to Cliftonville as the 'reds'. There are so many clubs who play in red, why not just call Liverpool by their name and solve the problem.
