Derry led by two points at half time but Leo McLoone's goal early in the second half proved decisive as Jim McGuinness' side took victory by 1-11 to 0-11.

The first half was a fairly insipid affair with the sides managing just two points between them in the opening 10 minutes.

After Mark Lynch and Darrach O'Connor had gotten their teams off the mark Patrick McBrearty was guilty of a squandering a glorious goal chance and after the sides exchanged further scores Derry edged ahead with a superb point from Emmet Bradley.

Further scores from Bradley, Ciaran McFaul and a wonderful long-range effort from Niall Holly saw the Oak Leaf County lead by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time.

It was all change within moments of the restart though as Donegal began to exert their influence on the game.

First the industrious Anthony Thompson reduced the deficit to a single score with a point from play before the visitors grabbed what would prove to be a decisive goal.

Frank McGlynn fed Leo McLoone to lift the ball over Derry stopper Thomas Mallon and into the net.

Donegal's tails were up and four further unanswered scores saw them move six points clear of Brian McIver's side.

Derry managed to stem the flow and grab some scores of their own, with Lynch's effort leaving just two points between the sides with 10 minutes left to play.

However, it proved to be too little, too late for the hosts, and Donegal had the final say with the last score of the game to seal the victory.

The result sees Derry drop to the qualifiers, while Donegal will now face either Fermanagh or Antrim in the semi-finals.
