Cliftonville have won the season's curtain-raising competition the Charity Shield, beating Ballymena United 4 - 2 in a penalty shoot-out.

Cliftonville's goalkeeper Conor Devlin was the hero of the penalty shoot-out after the match was scoreless at 90 minutes.

Neal Gawley hit the woodwork in the regulation time and Joe Gormley also came close when his late shot hit the upright.

In the shoot-out George McMullan, James Knowles, Johnny Flynn and Marc Smyth scored for Tommy Breslin's side.

Matthew Tipton and Michael Ruddy scored the Braidmen's goals

Gormley saw his effort saved by United custodian Dwayne Nelson.

Conor Devlin in Cliftonville's nets, however, saved successive spot-kicks from David Cushley and Tony Kane as Cliftonville carried off the Shield.
