The striker netted what was to be the only goal of the Europa League qualifying first leg, leaving Cliftonville in with a shout of progressing to the next round of the tournament.

The north Belfast club had picked up wins in the past against Latvian side Dinaburg FC and Croatia's HNK Cibalia, but European success at their own ground had previously proved elusive.

Chances came from the ranks of both teams on Thursday night, with Papa Diouf threatening for Kalmar and both Marc Smyth and Ryan Catney unlucky to be denied for the hosts.

Ciaran Caldwell was unluckier still though, seeing his strike hit the back of the net - only to be ruled as offside.

The first half also saw both Cliftonville and Kalmar have penalty shouts for handball dismissed.

But it wasn't until 70 minutes gone that Boyce took to the pitch and opened the scoring with his low drive past Kalmar's Etrit Berisha.

Cliftonville shut out the opposition to keep a clean sheet and take the victory that will stand them in good stead going into next week's return leg.

Kalmar will host Cliftonville at the Guldfágeln Arena on Thursday 12 July, with kick-off at 6pm.

Gerry north Belfast that's the sort of thing my da would say but I thought it was just paranoia from clifetonvile fans . It makes utv look really poor and it was a shocking decision by who ever decided that this game didn't merit a camera crew . Maybe there not football fans who ever made that call .

Arm chair supporter in Antrim road - that's a silly question; everyone knows that more or less the entire UTV and BBC NI football budgets are spent covering everything connected with Linfield and their superstar manager.
