Missing a shot that could have won your team World Cup progression at the expense of hosts Brazil would surely be something most footballers would want to forget, but not Chile's Mauricio Pinilla.

The striker now has a painful addition to his ink collection, in the form of a permanent reminder of how close he came to being the hero of his home nation.

Pinilla fired towards the goal in the dying minutes of extra time, after Chile and Brazil found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes on Saturday.

But the shot thundered off the crossbar, sending the game into penalties.

And Chile's luck appeared to have really run out, with Pinilla and teammates Alexis Sánchez and Gonzalo Jara all failing to score.

In the end, the 3-2 victory fell to Brazil and Chile had to exit the tournament.

It looks like Pinilla is trying to put it all behind him though - literally. He now has the image of the ball hitting the crossbar tattooed on his back, with script reading "One centimeter from glory ..."

Absolutely hate tattoos but for him it will be a nice reminder to think you could have been a hero for your nation.
