The only goal of the game came on 13 minutes when John O'Flynn fired the visitors ahead when he seized onto a pass from Josh O'Shea.

The victory keeps Cork City in second spot four points behind pacesetters Dundalk at the top of the Airtricity Premier League.

After suffering their first league defeat since May last week at Shamrock Rovers, Derry were hoping to bounce back with a win. However, they were denied a share of the spoils late on when Mark Timlin's effort rattled the Cork woodwork.

After falling behind to that 13th minute opener Derry had goalkeeper Gerard Doherty to thank for keeping them in the game with a superb save to deny O'Flynn from grabbing a second on 20 minutes.

At the other end former Linfield midfielder Philip Lowry thought he had levelled but his goalbound header was cleared off the Cork line by Brian Lenihan.

Cork keeper McNutty then showed his worth by keeping out a shot from Dean Jarvis as the Candystripes enjoyed a good spell in the game.

Early in the second half there was a let-off for Peter Hutton's side when a header from Darren Dennehy hit the post.

Derry upped the tempo and McEleney forced a superb save out of McNulty before Timlin's effort hit the bar near the end.

Derry City are back in league action on Monday night when they travel to Drogheda United, 7.45pm start.

While Crusaders may be bossing the Danske Bank Premiership, it was their North Belfast rivals Cliftonville who made the headlines again this weekend.
