A statement on the club website said: "Darren is keen to secure regular first team football and acknowledges that last season's performances were below the standard both the club and the player had hoped for.
"Despite this move, the player is taking a full part in pre-season training."
The 26-year-old former Coleraine player signed a three year contract for the Oval in May last year and made 25 starts for the side during the last season.
Jason Hill and Aaron Hogg have both had their contracts with the Glens extended by one year, while Eddie Patterson's squad for pre-season training has also extended.
Jay Magee, Mark Clarke, Kevin Bradley and Marcus Kane are expected to supplement the side for the 2012-13 campaign pending the conclusion of contract negotiations and board approval.
