Woman raped in Belfast attack

Police have launched an investigation after a woman was raped in Belfast city centre in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old victim was walking along an alleyway just off Royal Avenue beside the Castle Court Shopping Centre when she was approached from behind by a man who sexually assaulted her, police said.Her attacker was described as black, aged in his mid-30s and around 5'6" tall, of thin build and wearing navy-coloured jeans and a checked shirt.Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who was in Royal Avenue at the time of the assault and saw a woman walking in the area to contact them.Information about this incident should be passed to detectives in the Rape Crime Unit on the non-emergency number 101.Alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
