The 21-year-old victim was walking along an alleyway just off Royal Avenue beside the Castle Court Shopping Centre when she was approached from behind by a man who sexually assaulted her, police said.

Her attacker was described as black, aged in his mid-30s and around 5'6" tall, of thin build and wearing navy-coloured jeans and a checked shirt.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who was in Royal Avenue at the time of the assault and saw a woman walking in the area to contact them.

Information about this incident should be passed to detectives in the Rape Crime Unit on the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

@Carl Kelly agree with you totally, there are many weirdos out there now so it's always best to act on the cautious side and not be unaccompanied in any area late at night. @SIOBHAN in ORMEAU==I don't think ANYONE is suggesting the victim was in any way to blame, just that these perpetrators are opportunists and will be more likely to act if someone is on their own and thereby more vunerable.

@Carl Kelly, victim blame much? Responsibility for this attack rests squarely with the attacker.

far too much of this type of sex crime taking place here, anyone convicted of rape should get ten years in jail and serve all of it.
