Officers were called to the scene in the George's Lane area of the city on Saturday night shortly after 11pm.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the fire at the property, where woman's body was found inside.

Police, who are treating the blaze as suspicious, cordoned off the area for most of Sunday while forensic examinations took place.

Reacting to the news, local Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey commented: "This is very grim news coming from a quiet part of Newry and my thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman."

Mr Casey said local people have told him they believe the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was not from the area.

He added: "I urge anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the PSNI and again I offer my condolences to the family."

Newry and Armagh SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said there is a sense of shock in the community.

"We had a death through a road accident just a few days ago outside of Newry so this is the second death in the locality," he explained.

"My thoughts are with the family and the friends of the person who has lost her life here and on behalf of the whole community, I would express our sympathy to them."

Anyone who knows anything about this incident is asked to contact Ardmore Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
