It happened on the main road into the Co Antrim town on Wednesday evening.

Police said two cars were involved in the crash on the Belfast Road, close to Rodgers Quay.

Emergency teams - including two rapid response paramedics, one accident and emergency crew and a doctor - were dispatched to the scene just before 8pm.

Police later confirmed a woman aged in her 50s had died.

Two other men have been taken to hospital for treatment on injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

The cars involved in the incident were a green Suzuki Ignis and a black Seat Leon. Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has any further information, is asked to call the PSNI.

The road remains closed between Trooperslane Road and the Marine Highway roundabout.

It was my partner's aunt who sadly lost her life. Thanks for the kind comments and thanks to kathy in magherafelt for pointing out that attempting to save someone's life is more important than delays to other road users. From the sound of it the ambulance emergency services did a great job. Thanks again for the kind messages.

@ETC A little bit of perspective for you. A woman dies, 2 people are in hospital and your annoyed because the police were too busy tending to the emergency to direct your daughter home. Tell me this did your daughter eventually manage to struggle through the maze that is Carrick to get home? Get a grip.

Spent a number of hours in rvh last nite wen the youngs lads were brought in. For people who judge them boys before they even no what the story was or how the crash happened. U just paint all the boys in the area with the same brush. Prayers to both familys. As i seen the parents of both boys last nite very hurt as well.

Thoughts and prayers are with this lady's family. Have to agree with Jim in Whitehead, this stretch of road is madness at night. Lots of boy and girl racers and never a police car to be seen, unless something happens. Maybe now they will do something about it, unfortunately it takes a tragedy like this before they do anything.

the antisocial driving going on at night at the car park is getting out of hand yet the police have known this for years yet nothing has been done also Carrick council should think about speed cameras on that stretch of road as this is not the first death on it. god bless and help this woman,s family in this difficult time.
