The 26-year-old has been charged with disorderly behaviour and provocative conduct.

A police spokesman added: "The charges are in relation to an incident during the ongoing flag protests outside Belfast city Hall."

The woman is due to appear in Belfast Magistrates' Court on Monday.

In December 2012, there was widespread anger among the loyalist community at a decision by Belfast City Council to restrict the number of days the Union flag flies at city hall.

The move sparked continued protests across the region with some breaking out in violent public disorder.
