Andrew Duffy, 24, drowned in the Royal Canal in Dublin on his way home on Sunday night shortly before midnight.
He fell into the water at Binns bridge in the Phibsboro area of north Dublin.
A Garda spokeswoman said a man was pulled from the water but later pronounced dead.
"A man appeared to have fallen into the canal. He was taken to the Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead," she said.
Andrew was a well-known Gaelic football player with Termon GAA in north Donegal.
Former Donegal North-East TD and doctor at Mr Duffy's local surgery James McDaid said the whole of the Donegal community was feeling the impact of the sudden loss.
"It's a terrible tragedy on a day that all of Donegal was actually celebrating perhaps one of the greatest displays of any Donegal since I knew them," he said.
Mr McDaid said his nephew was with Andrew when the accident happened as they were going to stay at a flat also belonging to a nephew of Mr McDaid.
"He's devastated," he explained.
"They were walking along and he happened to be in front of him and he looked back and he saw him falling into the canal but there was nothing that could be done."
