Watches for dying man's sons stolen

A distraught family in Co Louth is appealing for the public's help in retrieving two watches which were left by a dying man for his two young sons, but have now been stolen in a burglary.

Father-of-three Stephen Carroll, 38, died in November after battling cancer for over a year. Before his death, he had two Omega watches - which he received for his 21st and 30th birthdays - engraved for his two sons Senan, 10 and Keelan, eight, to inherit. One of the watches was a Constellation model engraved on the back with 'To Keelan Love Daddy x' while the other was a Seamaster model which had 'To Senan Love Daddy x' inscribed on it.Thieves struck at his parent's home in Blackrock, where the watches were being stored, sometime between Friday 17 and Saturday 18 January. Gardaí said that jewellery and an unknown amount of cash was stolen in the burglary. The family, who are worried that the thieves may try to sell the watches across the border, are particularly appealing for people in Northern Ireland to contact the police if offered the watches for sale."Anyone can get in touch and even leave the watches somewhere for collection, a hotel reception, a church, anywhere that ensures we can get them safely back," a family statement said.
