He was 44-year-old Lee Drake from the Ballynahinch area.

The crash, which involved a black Vauxhall Astra, happened on the Ballygowan Road on Monday shortly before 6.20am.

The road was closed for several hours, but has since been re-opened. Police are appealing to any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

Mr Drake was sixth person to die on the roads this year. The Environment Minister Mark H Durkan is convening a special meeting of road safety groups at Stormont on Tuesday.

Meanwhile police said they will continue to push the road safety message.

Superintendent David Moore, PSNI Head of Road Policing, said: "No-one can say they haven't been told about the dangers and the risks. And for those that continue to ignore them, the courts are the answer.

"And that's where we come in and we have put more people in front of the courts around the drink driving issue in the run up to this Christmas than we did last year and we're very disappointed to have had to that," he said.

"But for those that don't get the education message, they'll find the enforcement message is right behind it."

More pedestrians during these early dark nights should be encouraged to wear bright or alluminous clothes surely if this saved one live it would be worth it.
