Police have confirmed a bomb was found under a car during a security alert in Londonderry.

The explosive device was discovered behind the rear wheel of a car outside a family home in the Westlake area of the town at around 7am.

Several dozen residents were moved from their homes while army bomb disposal experts examined the object.

Maurice Logue lives opposite to where the device was found. His family, including young daughters, had to leave through a neighbour's garden to reach safety.

He said: "A policewoman came and told us that we had to get out of the house as soon as possible, get everybody out. The police told us we weren't allowed to take the cars out of the driveway.

A controlled explosion was carried out to make safe the device before it was removed for examination.

Local SDLP Councillor Gus Hastings said the incident was shocking.

"This is a very residential area, the people who live here are quiet and reserved, and this is totally out of character for anything like this to happen," he commented.

"Bombs, no matter if they're real or unreal, cause mayhem in relation to children, younger people, older people and especially people with disabilities, you can't prepare people with disabilities for situations like this."

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Detectives are keeping an open mind as to the motivation behind the alert and they are appealing for witnesses or for anyone with information that could assist the investigation to get in touch with them."

Police can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101 or anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Always puzzling to me why there are so few comments condemning this and similar activity where guns /bombs are used to maim/kill. What are the priorities of people In this place?? I guess we just have to look at the stories that attract a high number of comments and WEEP!
