'Paramilitaries behind Bangor shooting'

UTV understands that loyalist paramilitaries were behind a shooting in Bangor in which two men were injured.

One man was shot three times in the chest and another was shot in the leg in the Whitehill Estate at around 1am on Monday.Both men were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.The man whose leg was injured discharged himself - while the man with chest injuries remains in hospital in a stable condition.Security sources have told UTV it is believed the UVF in east Belfast may be involved in the shooting.Police are appealing for anyone with information about the attack to contact them.A PSNI spokesperson said there will be an increased police presence in the area while they carry out investigations.Whitehill Community Association said those people living in the area were left shocked by the incident.Tracey Morrow from the group, said: "It is a very friendly estate we all get along very well together."You usually find in any day people wouldn't pass you without speaking to you."It is quite frightening what has happened here."North Down councillor Peter Martin said he was shocked by the incident and asked anyone who may have information in connection with the attack to contact police.The DUP representative said: "This is shocking, especially for those families who have had to be given this news that their loved one has suffered terribly in this attack and our thoughts and sympathies go out to them."This is a very peaceful estate, there is a lot of really sound community work going on and there is a lot of engagement with the local council."This shooting has to be condemned. This is part of what we grew up with years ago and we all hope these actions were part of our past and not our future."
