Ugly scenes at the game between Linfield and Shamrock Rovers at Windsor Park.

Riot police were called to the stadium during the cross-border clash in Belfast on Monday night.

It is understood some Rovers fans broke through barriers in the top deck of the North Stand and made their way towards Linfield fans.

Police brought the situation under control however both sets of supporters were heard goading eachother throughout the game.

A statement from the PSNI said: "Police dealt with a disturbance in Windsor Park earlier this evening involving a section of Shamrock Rovers fans.

"Police restored calm within the ground and all fans were able to leave the match safety after the final whistle.

"Police personnel remained in the area for a period of time and can confirm the area is now calm and traffic is moving freely."

It is understood a number of seats were ripped up in the North Stand.

A flare and a smoke canister were thrown on the pitch, causing the game to be stopped briefly.

The trouble comes after a section of Linfield fans were filmed singing allegedly sectarian songs during the first leg in Dublin last week.

The Blues lost the game 3-1 and 7-2 on aggregate.

The 'facts' are clearly visible on the video, it clearly shows who is attacking the PSNI, unless Rovers fans have moved into the village and have taken to wearing RW&B scarfs. Or was this just a 'peaceful riot'? After the game ended. Clue the 'they started it comments'.

'Riot police were called to the stadium' - I was there with my sons and was amazed, well maybe not with the 15 minute response for police to arrive.Why was there no police there when this was going to happen.This could have turned out a lot worse than it did and I and other supporters were asking where are the police.What a total contrast from the policing a week earlier.I thought so called high risk games would have had a police unit even if not visible at the ready if trouble starts.It was the same response as of Boxing day a few years ago when Glentoran fans started trouble.Surely whoever was directing police operations has questions to answer!

as a regular at the brandywell watching my beloved derry city and l have experienced violence from both of these clubs' supporters and they are as bad as each other, the minority of the fans from these clubs wouldn't no if a ball was blew up or busted, Animals behave better.
