The Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon system will be manufactured by the company's plant in east Belfast.

The system is aimed at deflecting the threat from small ships and fast attack craft.

It is a lightweight, precision strike missile, designed to be fired from land, sea or air.

First Minister Peter Robinson said: "The talents of Northern Ireland's manufacturing and engineering labour force are now held in high esteem across the global aerospace and defence industries and today's announcement is further evidence of this."

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster added: "This is significant contract for Thales and highlights the expertise and highly skilled workforce here in Northern Ireland."

Thales is a centre of excellence for missile design and manufacture within the Thales Group and it is understood that the contract will secure 60 high quality jobs and also provide additional opportunities for the supply chain.

Shamrock is officially one of the Trolls on this site. He revels in being negative to all articles and/or comments. I think his idea of an ideal world consists of everybody smiling and skipping around on streets made of chocolate and rain made of milk lol.

Shamrock would have us all surrender to Captain Jack Sparrow and let the navy boys walk the plank.. Talking of planks, it seems there are a few tree huggers around!

As the article indicates, this system defends ships from small, fast armed attack craft. To those peacelovers who criticise, would they rather the pirates won?

So much for living times of peace when governments around the world are blowing cash like this on arms deals....
