He was walking home from a local golf club with a group of friends when a man grabbed him from behind and hit him twice in the face with a beer bottle.
It happened around 6.00pm in the Westland Road/Oldpark Road area on Sunday 25 August.
Another man also shouted abuse at the group.
He is described as being approximately 5ft 6 of medium build with ginger hair and pointy features.
The teen was treated in hospital for a large laceration to his forehead but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Police are appealing for information and are treating the incident as sectarian.
