She was the driver of a silver-coloured Peugeot car that collided with a blue-coloured Audi on the Portaferry Road a mile outside of the town on Sunday shortly before 8.30pm.

The male driver and passenger of the Audi were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Alliance Strangford MLA, Kieran McCarthy, expressed his condolences following the death of the young woman.

"I am deeply saddened that another life has been lost on our roads. I would like to send my condolences to her family and friends at what must be an extremely difficult time for them," Mr McCarthy said.

"We must do more to improve road safety and ensure that no more lives are lost.

"I would urge all road users to take extra precautions when they are out on the road and to be vigilant of others."

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash, or anyone who was travelling on the road around the time it happened, to contact their Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple Police Station, or local police in Newtownards, on the non-emergency number 101.

The Portaferry Road was closed overnight, but has since reopened.

Why does everyone assume all these accidents has something to do with speed? Look at the state of our roads. Drains blocked, hedges and verges not cut,pot holes and wat ever sort of Tarmac they're now using has no grip. Speed cameras will not work, they're just a money making racket
