The man was helping a fare out of his vehicle shortly after 1.45am on Sunday in the Victoria Parade area when a man jumped into the driver's seat of the car and attempted to drive off.

When he realised there were no keys in the car he got out and became involved in an altercation with the taxi driver.

A second man, who was a passenger in another taxi, also became involved.

The taxi driver managed to escape to safety from the two males but sustained a number of injuries.

A 25-year-old man was arrested a short time later and was released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detectives have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with any information to contact them at CID in Woodbourne Police Station or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

They are particularly keen to identify the driver of the blue-coloured taxi that the second man involved in the incident got out of.
