A PSNI spokesperson confirmed they would follow up all potential lines of enquiry after a mother's account of what happened in the shop at Royal Avenue on Friday was shared across social media.
In the post, she explained that a young woman had spoken to her daughter and claimed she tried to lure the child over to her.
Commenting on the alleged incident, Chief Inspector Robert Murdie, Area Commander South Belfast, said: "I can confirm that officers are making enquiries following a report of a suspicious approach in a store in Donegall Place in Belfast City Centre at the weekend.
"We were made aware of the incident shortly before 7pm on Sunday. A statement has been taken and all potential lines of enquiry will be followed up including a review of any available CCTV."
