The Northern Ireland Assembly has held its first ever 'Tweet-up', linking up with the social networking site Twitter to examine the ways Stormont delivers information to the public.

It is the first legislature in the UK or Ireland to host such an event.

Almost 100 people - including Twitter users, MLAs, Assembly staff and members of the media - attended the get together on Tuesday evening.

Gr8 atmosphere at #niatweetup Delighted to be involved. Hopefully the first of many!!

"Northern Ireland Assembly has about 3,000 people who follow us on Twitter and we thought: 'Well, why don't we get them all together?'" Head of Communications, Susie Brown, told UTV.

"The really important thing about Twitter is that, some people may never pick up the phone and talk to us here at the Assembly and they may never walk in the doors down here at Parliament Buildings, but they may talk to us on Twitter.

"And it's that one-to-one instant communication with the Assembly which we want to try and help people feel connected to - what goes on here and our elected representatives and the important work which we do here in the building."

The Tweet-up is being discussed on Twitter using the hashtag #niatweetup.
