The 23-year-old was approached from behind by three men while she was walking in the Bell Steele Road area on Friday night, from the direction of Stewartstown Road.
Police in west Belfast said: "She was forced onto a grass bank close to the Woodside Estate where she was held down and sexually assaulted."
The woman was taken to hospital following the incident.
Anyone who saw her or a group of men in the area at the time of the attack, at about 10.10pm, has been asked to contact the PSNI's Rape Crime Unit 0845 600 8000.
Sinn Féin councillor Charlene O'Hara condemned the incident.
She said: "First and foremost the thoughts of the community are with the victim who has suffered this dreadful ordeal. I would call on anyone with any information whatsoever to contact the PSNI so that the culprits can be taken off the streets.
"I would also appeal to women to remain vigilant and to make sure they are accompanied when travelling at night until those responsible are arrested.
"This has shocked the local community who will not feel safe until the perpetrators are apprehended."
