The vehicle, which was parked in Workman Avenue, was targeted twice at the weekend, having its rear windscreen and rear nearside windows smashed.

Gerald Solinas, of the West Belfast UPRG, an advisory group which has links to the UDA, has blamed nationalist youths for the criminal damage.

He said the nuns, who have been living in the predominately protestant area for some time, have previously fallen victim to "sectarian" attacks.

William Humphrey, North Belfast DUP MLA, said that there were minor incidents of interface trouble between nationalist and unionist youths at the Lanark Way/Springfield Road interface over the weekend.

"This culminated in two attacks on a car parked in Workman Avenue closest to the interface gates on Friday and Sunday nights, believed to have been carried out by nationalist youths entering from the Springfield Road."

He said the nuns are part of the local community.

"This was the latest in a series of attacks on their car and their home by nationalist youths who target the first property after entering through the peace-line gate from Springfield Road. It is disgraceful that any resident should suffer from such attacks.

"It says more about the ignorance of the nationalist youths responsible that they have no understanding of the true nature of this interface community in carrying out what they consider to be a sectarian attack," Mr Humphrey added.

"No-one should have to endure such hate crimes. I have asked the police to increase patrols in this interface area over the coming days and I appeal to the local communities on both sides to do all that they can to deter any further attacks."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

It takes a very brave man indeed to attack two elderly ladies. I don't know who perpetrated this attack but who ever did it should hang their cowardly heads in shame.
