The man was seen last fishing off the Ramore Head point just after 4pm on Saturday when eyewitnesses reported seeing him fall into the water.
The coastguard, police, Portrush RNLI and local fishing vessels are currently in the area searching for the man.
The coastguard said the man, thought to be a foreign national and in his 30s, was out fishing with two others, who are providing information to those involved in the search operation.
The search was expected to continue until darkness and will likely resume again at first light on Sunday.
Meanwhile a man was rescued from the water after falling from the cliffs in Portstewart.
