Around 28 pupils were onboard the vehicle as it skidded onto a grass bank at the Knockadoo Road shortly after 9am on Wednesday.

It was feared the bus could slide off the bank and the emergency services declared a potential major incident.

Andy Sinclair from the Fire Service said crews from Cookstown and Magherafelt went to the scene.

"There was a coach that had left the road and was overhanging into a ditch," he explained.

Fire fighters used cables to tie the bus to a tractor to stop it from moving and then helped the children off the vehicle.

But Mr Sinclair said there was another crash as crews responded to the call.

"We had an appliance that was driving along the same stretch of road and it too left the road.

"We were lucky enough we were able to instigate emergency planning procedures and send another appliance from a neighbouring station," he explained.

"It's very fortunate that we all got away and everybody appears to be uninjured. It's a reminder to people that the roads are slippery and to take your time and pay attention on the roads."

Meanwhile a woman has been cut free from a car following a crash in Downpatrick.

The vehicle collided with a bus on Market Street in the town on Wednesday afternoon.

Eight people were on the bus and it is understood no one was seriously hurt during the crash.

Two people have been treated for minor injuries.

The road remains closed between Irish Street and St Patrick's Avenue.
