Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at Rodgers Quay just after 11.30pm on Friday.

A barman had raised the alarm, saving the lives of a number of people who had been inside at the time.

At this stage, it is believed an electrical fault may have been the cause.

Seven fire appliances were needed to get the blaze under control, but there are no reports of any injuries.

"We have members of the club who are off to represent Ireland in the Olympics and it is a vital time for the club. It would be their peak time," local UUP councillor John Stewart said.

"Knowing the members though, this won't stop them. I know the people involved and they will rebuild this club. The most important thing is, from what I can make out, no one was injured in the blaze."

Alliance East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson, who visited the scene during the night, said: "This is a major loss for the town.

"When I went down to see what had happened I was shocked by the utter devastation that this fire has caused.

"Many youth groups regularly use it and I know they will shocked by the loss of the club.

"However, I hope that the club can get together quickly to go about rebuilding it."

Thank godness a fuction was not on and they did not have a large crowd in. It could have been fatal. The club will rise up from the ashes and be as good as it was. With all the support it has and good members.
