Four masked men, two believed to be armed, entered a home in Kingsbury Gardens at around 10.45pm on Thursday.

An 11-year-old girl, a 36-year-old woman and a man in his 20s were also in the property as the gang beat the 45-year-year-old victim and shot him repeatedly in the leg. He has been taken to hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

John Dallat, SDLP MLA for the area, described those who carried out the attack as thugs.

"This is the handy work of loyalist paramilitaries who continually seek to assert their authority over the lives of innocent people," he said.

"They didn't care if that person loses a limb.

"They're just a scourge on society in Coleraine. We have areas where paramilitaries, in their ancient nostalgia, still believe they control. That has to end."

He said it is the latest attack on the family, who he said "have been to hell and back".

"They had their house shot up before, they've been pipe-bombed, and they've had their car burned. But I think that last night really took it to its limits."

Hmmmm big headline news for past two days while republican gun attacks are one liners buried deep in the news headlines , republicans have shot scores of people in past few years while loyalists have shot one or two so definately seems as if loyalists get treated very unequally concerning the media.

Again and again.Loyalist scum-bags paramilitary's doing what they do best.... I hope all responsible politicians (Hello first minister) condemn this insanity, and find a way to lock-up those disgusting people.

Its a pity john Dallat cant be as quick to lambast republican terrorists when theyre out wrecking the area , hes been very quiet on the issue of republican sectarian violence !!!

You always hear about dissident republicans (and rightly so, especally when theirr planting bombs, etc) but its important to remember loyalist paramilitaries are still very active and theres even Loyalist dissident groups such as the Real UFF who are just as hostile to the peace agreements as dissident republicans.

Having recently watched the early evening news on UTV regarding the attack on a family in Coleraine I was struck by the fact that the only politico to stand up to condemn this dreadful attack was an SDLP member. Has Gregory,Nigel, young Paisley etc; lost their collective tongues regarding this abhorrent attack or are they just simply afraid to speak out. What are the PSNI doing about these ATTACKSSSS? To attack a family in front of young children defies belief and only goes to show that the criminals appear to attack at will in areas like Coleraine. Shame on you.
