PSNI equal pay settlement proposed

PSNI equal pay settlement proposed

The Northern Ireland Executive will be asked to agree to a multi-million pound equal pay deal for PSNI staff and former NIO employees, UTV understands.

The pay-out is planned for those staff excluded from the £130m Northern Ireland Civil Service equal pay settlement in 2009.It was prompted after trade union NIPSA lodged claims invoking the Equal Pay Act (NI) 1970, which requires employers to pay male and female employees equal pay for equal work.MLAs have been lobbying for PSNI and former NIO staff to also be compensated.Finance Minister Simon Hamilton has proposed a £6,000 lump sum payment to an estimated 2,500 staff affected as a possible resolution to the issue. The total amount that could be paid out ranges from £32.5m to £50m.The DUP minister will put his recommendation to the other Executive Ministers next week.
