A man and woman have been rescued from a malicious house fire in north Belfast, after neighbours helped them to safety using a ladder.

The fire was discovered at the Mackey Street property, off the Limestone Road, just after midnight on Sunday.

The pair, who had been asleep on the first floor of the property, were led to safety.

A wheelie bin was found on fire next to the front door of the house.

A Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that the occupants were alerted to the fire by their working smoke alarm. Three fire appliances attended the scene.

Police are treating the fire as malicious and a motive is being investigated.

Detectives are appealing to anyone who has information about the deliberate fire to come forward.
