NI's derelict sites to receive funds

Just over £600k is being allocated to the task of tackling decayed, derelict sites across the region by the Department of the Environment.

The areas to be targeted include a facelift for the run down North Street/ Donegall Street/ Royal Avenue area of Belfast city centre; improvements to the town centres of Newtownards and Comber and the removal of eyesores from main arterial routes around Rostrevor, Warrenpoint in Co Down and the Antrim Coast Road.The funding is being divided out across the following council areas -- £220k for Belfast CHAR(13) + CHAR(10)- £111k for Newtownards and ComberCHAR(13) + CHAR(10)- £102k for North DownCHAR(13) + CHAR(10)- £80k for Newry, Rostrevor,Warrenpoint, Crossmaglen and KilkeelCHAR(13) + CHAR(10)- £53k for Newtownabbey CHAR(13) + CHAR(10)- £39k for Larne, Islandmagee, Glenarm and CarnloughThe work is expected to commence in the near future.Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "This funding will enhance these areas, removing eyesores along key coastal areas and in our towns and cities, boosting tourism and helping our economy."I have seen at first hand - particularly in my home town of Derry - the good work that this dereliction funding can do so I was keen to continue it."This is why in addition to the £500k provided by the Executive in the January Monitoring Round, I have provided a supplement of £100k from my own Department's funds."He continued: "I congratulate the councils who secured funding in this round and commend the efforts of all those who applied. Unfortunately not every bid could be successful but I encourage all councils to continue to submit quality bids so that I can continue to look for funding opportunities to tackle decay and dereliction."It is my aim to create a better environment and a stronger economy. This funding does exactly this by enhancing our environment, encouraging tourism and strengthening our economy."
