NI21 has seen just one of its local government candidates elected, following a party meltdown which came about just ahead of voters going to the polls.

Johnny McCarthy will represent Lisburn North in the Lisburn and Castlereagh super council.

He has told UTV he will stand as an NI21 councillor despite the party's problems.

"I was disappointed when the revelations came out, but it came that late in the campaign that I just concentrated on my own campaign - that's what everyone else did," he said.

"We are not going to stop because of what's going on between two men.

"We are going to unite behind what we are saying as a party. We worked hard - we had the best campaign, something which was universally acknowledged.

"So it was just get the head down and do the work."

NI21 was thrown into turmoil after a row developed between party leader Basil McCrea and deputy leader John McCallister, after a change in designation from 'unionist' to 'other'.

It then emerged that Mr McCrea is facing allegations of inappropriate sexual activity, which he denies.
