George Gray's body was found at his flat by a friend on the Cregagh Road at around 5pm.
At a press conference on Sunday, Detective Inspector Chris Wilson, of the Serious Crime Branch, said that although they were awaiting the results of a post mortem examination, they believe he was viciously assaulted.
Earlier, the PSNI announced the launch of a murder inquiry.
Mr Gray was last seen at around 9pm on Thursday.
"George appears to have been a very quiet man who kept to himself and enjoyed his football," DI Wilson said.
"We are trying to piece together the events running up to the time of George's death and the time his body was discovered."
Two men, aged 29 and 34, arrested on Saturday morning in relation to the murder remain in custody.
DI Wilson also issued a specific appeal for information.
"I would also appeal to the driver and passenger of a silver coloured Ford Fiesta seen parked outside the property around 5pm on Friday evening just before George's body was found; to come forward so that we can rule them out of the investigation."
Police searches are being carried out in the Cregagh Road area.
