A mother and her three children have escaped serious injury following an arson attack on their home in Antrim.

The front door of the Carnbrock Drive home, in the Stiles estate, was set alight just before 11pm on Tuesday.

The mother and her three children, aged six, 12 and 15, were all treated for smoke inhalation in hospital.

The woman said she and her family were lucky to be alive and that they were planning to move out of the area.

She said the attack followed an incident at the weekend during which her son was set upon by a gang.

Mayor of Antrim Brian Graham said: "This was shocking and something we don't want in our town and borough.

"My thoughts go out to the family and I would urge those who know anything to report it to police.

"There were children in the house at the time and this was very sinister attack."

Detectives are appealing to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has information to contact them at Antrim on the non-emergency number 101.
