One of the accused, Avinash Treebhoowoon, had been due to return to the witness box to be re-examined by his defence barrister on Friday morning.

But instead, the judge summoned the jury into courtroom number five just before 3pm and explained that he and the prosecution and defence lawyers had been dealing with a point of law.

"That matter has now been sorted out and we will resume on Monday morning," he said.

"I thank you very much for your patience."

Treebhowoon had been the main focus of the trial this week, taking to the witness stand on both Tuesday and Wednesday, breaking down as he made his claims of police brutality.

Both Treebhowoon and his co-accused Sandip Moneea, former employees of the Legends Hotel where the McAreaveys were spending their honeymoon, deny carrying out the murder of Michaela in January 2011.
